Turmeric Paste for Dark Underarms

Posted by Kesha Ward on

Our underarms don’t always get the love and attention they deserve. After talking to clients about their head to toe beauty program and skin concerns I realized very few knew what caused dark underarms let alone knew what to do about it. Dark underarms can be caused by a number of reasons:

Shaving

When you shave your underarms, the hair that grows in is sometimes darker than the color of your skin. The dark hair can give the appearance of a dark cast or stain on the underarms. Avoid shaving your underarms altogether and/or invest in laser hair removal.

Dead Skin Buildup

More often than not, the dark color under the arm is the result of dead skin cells. Exfoliate with a product with natural lactic acid. I am not a fan of commercial products with lactic acid because they typically have a bunch of junk in them. Yogurt is a natural lactic acid.

Deodorant & Antiperspirants

The fragrances and chemicals used in mass produced deodorants could cause skin discoloration. Try making your own natural deodorant.

Acanthosis Nigricans

This is a medical condition that causes discoloration of the skin. It is related to insulin production and glandular problems. Speak with a medical professional about your risk for diabetes and make the necessary dietary changes.

Here’s a recipe for an underarm mask that may help to lighten the skin. Please be sure you are exfoliating under the arm along with the mask for the best result.

* 2 tbsp gram flour (also known as besan)
* 1 tbsp of milk (vegans use rice water instead)
* 1tbsp of lemon juice
* Pinch of turmeric

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl to make a thick paste. Apply it on the area in small circular motion for few mins and spread it as the mask for 30 mins and rinse off.
The cleansing properties of gram flour will cleanse the skin while lemon and milk with lighten and brighten the skin.

Please allow at least 6 weeks to see a difference.
