I absolutely love spring but as an allergy sufferer, I have to dig into my arsenal of oils to help me through the season. Without my oils and an occasional Allegra, I am a coughing, sneezing, watery eyed crazy lady. It really is no fun and if you suffer from allergies, you know what I’m talking about. Over the years I have found a few essential oils particularly useful during the dreaded allergy season. These are the oils that have worked for me.
Lavender Essential Oil
It doesn’t take much to make me reach for the lavender. I absolutely love the scent. Lavender is a natural antihistamine and has some serious anti-inflammatory properties. I take a glass roller bottle and fill it with lavender essential oil and a little grapeseed oil and I keep that baby with me at all times. When that little allergy headache and sniffles start, I grab my lavender roller and rub the oil on my forehead and under my nose. If you have sensitive skin, be sure to dilute the oil with another carrier oil like grapeseed, coconut, olive or almond. The inhalation method is also awesome. All you have to do is put 1- drops of lavender essential oil into your hands and cup your hands over your nose. Take a few really deep breaths. Boom. Inhalation complete.
Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint oil, or as I call it “pep pep” has a fresh minty aroma and tackles allergic reactions. It also has pain-relieving, cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. I prefer the inhalation method with peppermint oil. It helps to open my airways and can eases my congestion caused by spring allergies. You can also put a few drops of peppermint in your favorite oil or unscented body butter ( ahem…) and massage on your chest to make a natural chest rub.
Lemon Essential Oil
Lemon essential oil is a natural antihistamine as well. It can be blended with lavender and peppermint oil to create a knockout oil trio. I work with lemon essential oil often and absolutely love it. The scent of lemon essential oil produces a feeling happiness and we can all use that whether we have allergies or not.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Eucalyptus essential oil is also a winner when it comes to easing allergies. Eucalyptus oil is best when it is applied to the skin (don’t forget to use a carrier oil) or by steam inhalation. You can create your own little steam room effect by hanging eucalyptus in the shower and running the water to create steam- step in and wowwwww. Try it.
