Apricot kernel oil comes from the seeds of apricots. It is a light natural oil that is ideal for massage and overall moisture for the skin. The weight of apricot kernel oil is similar to grapeseed oil which makes it a nice blending oil. If you have store bought lotion that doesn’t have enough “slip” just add a few drops of apricot oil to loosen it up. In addition to apricot kernel oil being an amazing moisturizer, it helps to reduce inflammation when applied topically. It provides nutritional support to the skin.
When you purchase apricot oil, look for an oil that is yellow in color. The deepness of the yellow is determined by the variety of apricots used as well as the extraction process. The aroma should be slightly nutty. I typically recommend that clients with sensitive skin try using plain apricot oil. It tends to be non-irritating and soothing (but if you have acne, avoid using on your face). The oil absorbs effortlessly and spreads easily into the skin so the application is gentle and smooth. In other words, you do not have to do too much work to apply. You can even use as a spray oil because of the light consistency.
In my opinion, apricot oil derived from the cold press process is superior to the solvent extraction method. When the oil is cold pressed, the chemical compounds in the oil are not altered. We carry a high quality cold pressed organic apricot kernel oil in our Urban Apothecary. In preparation for the summer, we have been stocking our apothecary with natural oils. Our body butters are natural and do not fare well in warmer months and natural oils are a great substitute. You have the option of purchasing an unscented oil or enhancing the oil with an essential oil or phthalate free fragrance.
